This index was created to serve as a "Servicemen Index" for this book that was published without a "names" index and to aid in the research of family histories for Williamson County. This book is available in some of the public Libraries in Williamson County.
The index contains some 1750 names of servicemen along with the names of 5 nurses who served from Williamson County in the First World War. There are several obvious servicemen duplications contained in the book, all of the duplications are listed with the slight surname and name variations. The book was not an official record, but the publisher attempted to include all soldiers from the county and was sold apparently to families of servicemen. The book almost takes the form of a "Biographical Record" or Atlas common to the era. The book also dedicated a significant amount of space to public officials, area schools, area businesses and some biographical information on prominent people.
Typical Book Information
"S Record" in the Comments column indicates that a brief service record is available in the following format;
Last NAME, First NAME, Middle initial or Middle Name, City or home location, Age, Location where born (usually city, state if not local and country if foreign), (some will list parents), Employer and employer location, and occupation, Date entrained (began service), basic training camp and state located, (some will list service), (some will list service end if expired).A "Picture" comment indicates that the book contains a small picture of the soldier and a more detailed service. The picture was usually a one and one half inch tall oval portrait of the man usually in uniform.
Example Record of our Grandfather Elisha Stacy, which is found on page 181 with picture [14] on opposite page
This information is not to be used for any commercial purposes and is intended as an aid for further research. This book may also available from a fee based service called "Heritage Quest Online", and can be found under "publications for Williamson County."
