What words can be used to describe Holly? It can best be summed up by quoting a vet we saw once when our regular vet was not available. After spending just a few minutes with Holly, she said “What a great dog!” What a great dog is right. Holly has boundless enthusiasm and love for life and for her people. Okay, well not just her people, ALL people. Everyone is a playmate in her eyes. I’ll never forget the time we were walking along a sidewalk, with Holly pleasantly trotting beside me on her leash, and BAM! In a flash she had her front paws in the lap of a lady who had been sitting quietly enjoying an ice cream cone. I didn’t see, but I’m quite sure that Holly got a lick of ice cream before the lady or I even realized what happened. Fortunately for us, the lady enjoyed the encounter as much as Holly did. I apologized profusely and walked away embarrassed, but Holly was quite happy with herself and with life in general.
Holly is full of confidence, and she marched into our house on day one like she owned the place. Never mind that her housemate, Gypsy, had already taken up residence with us and was at least twice Holly’s size. And the two cats? Well, there’s a story in itself. But we quickly became one big, happy pack… two people, two dogs, and two cats.
Holly is very affectionate and lovable, and is completely in tune to us at all times. She likes to gaze straight into our eyes, as if she’s trying to see into our souls. She listens attentively, as if she’s trying to understand that strange language called English. Sometimes she speaks back to us, and it is quite humorous. Its sort of a guttural “wow-a-wow-a-wow”. Holly is by our sides or under foot constantly, because she doesn’t want to miss anything. Her favorite spot is in our laps, and at 35 pounds she makes quite a lapful. And she loves giving kisses, so you have to stay on guard if you don’t want a tongue in your ear. What a great dog.
